The 27 Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology divides the zodiac not only into twelve Rashis, but also into 27 Nakshatras, commonly known as lunar mansions. Each spans 13°20′ and is divided into four Padas.
The Nakshatras provide a more refined layer of interpretation than zodiac signs alone. They are particularly important in analysing the Moon, personality tendencies, planetary Dashas, compatibility, Muhurta and many traditional Jyotisha techniques.
A Nakshatra should nevertheless never be interpreted in isolation. Its lord, Pada, sign placement, planets occupying it, planetary strength, aspects, Dashas and the complete horoscope all influence the final interpretation.

The importance of Nakshatra lords
The sequence of Nakshatra rulers is: Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury. This nine-planet sequence repeats three times across the 27 Nakshatras.
The same sequence forms the basis of the widely used Vimshottari Dasha system. The Moon's birth Nakshatra is therefore particularly significant when calculating the starting planetary Dasha.
Nakshatra Padas
Every Nakshatra contains four Padas — 27 Nakshatras × 4 Padas = 108 Padas. Each Pada covers 3°20′ and corresponds with a Navamsha division, creating an important conceptual connection between the birth chart and the Navamsha or D9 chart.
Why your Moon Nakshatra is important
The Moon's Nakshatra at birth is commonly called the Janma Nakshatra. It is traditionally considered important for understanding emotional tendencies and behavioural patterns, and is also used in Dasha calculation, compatibility analysis and several Muhurta techniques.
However, identifying someone's Nakshatra alone is not sufficient for a complete horoscope interpretation. The Pada, lord, sign, house position, associated planets, planetary strength, Dashas and complete Kundli should all be considered.
For deeper interpretation, Jyotisha integrates Graha, Rashi, Bhava, Nakshatra, Pada, planetary relationships, Dasha and relevant divisional charts. This layered approach is one reason two people with apparently similar zodiac signs may have substantially different horoscope interpretations.
Astrological interpretations are traditional guidance frameworks and should not replace professional medical, legal, financial or other specialist advice.
