The Nine Planets of Vedic Astrology
The Navagrahas occupy a central place in Jyotisha: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
In astronomical terms, all nine are not planets: the Sun is a star, the Moon is Earth's natural satellite, and Rahu and Ketu represent the lunar nodes. In Jyotisha, however, they are treated collectively as Grahas because of their astrological significance.
Their effects in a horoscope depend on placement, house ownership, sign, strength, aspects, conjunctions, dignity, Dashas and the overall chart.

Benefic and challenging influences are context-dependent
Vedic astrology sometimes classifies planets as natural benefics or malefics, but this classification should not be used mechanically. A planet's actual role can change according to the Ascendant, house ownership, dignity, placement, aspects, conjunctions, planetary strength and Dasha periods.
For this reason, statements such as “Saturn is always bad,” “Jupiter always gives wealth,” or “Rahu always causes problems” oversimplify Jyotisha.
The nine Grahas form an interconnected system. A responsible horoscope analysis combines them with the 12 houses, 12 Rashis, Nakshatras, planetary relationships, Dashas and other relevant chart factors — the objective is to understand the pattern formed by the horoscope as a whole.
Astrological interpretations are traditional guidance frameworks and should not replace professional medical, legal, financial or other specialist advice.
