D40 divides each sign into forty portions of 45 arc-minutes. At this level of subdivision the chart belongs firmly to advanced practice.
Some contemporary Parashari schools specifically connect D40 with maternal lineage. Others describe its scope more broadly as fine auspicious and inauspicious influence. Presenting one of those conventions as the universal classical definition would misrepresent the state of the tradition, so both are noted here.
