Mangal Dosha (Manglik): What It Means and When It Is Cancelled
Mangal dosha is the most feared and most misunderstood term in matchmaking. Here is what it actually is and how cancellation is judged.

What Mangal dosha is
Mangal dosha is said to arise when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is traditionally read from three reference points — the Lagna, the Moon, and Venus — and the three do not always agree.
Why the fear is exaggerated
Mars is a natural karaka for energy, assertion and initiative. Its placement in these houses is read as a strong temperament entering the domestic sphere. That is a compatibility consideration, not a verdict on a person or a marriage.
Classical cancellation (bhanga)
Several conditions traditionally reduce or cancel the dosha:
- Mars in its own sign or exalted (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn)
- Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter or the Moon
- Both partners carrying the dosha
- Mars in a sign where the dosha does not apply for that particular house
- Advancing age of the individuals, per several classical commentaries
How it should be handled in matchmaking
