Gemstones and Remedies: What They Can and Cannot Do
A practical, non-commercial view of ratna and remedial guidance — when a stone is suggested, when it is not, and safer alternatives.
By Naveen Modgill
Remedies are supportive, never curative
In classical Jyotish, a remedy (upaya) is a supportive measure. It does not overwrite a chart, and no honest practitioner will claim otherwise. Remedies are voluntary and should never cause financial strain.
How a stone is chosen
A gemstone is selected from the chart, not from a birth month or a shop counter. The reading considers:
- The lagna lord and functional benefics for that ascendant
- The running dasha — a stone is usually tied to a period, not worn forever
- Afflictions that need strengthening rather than amplifying
- Whether a malefic planet would be strengthened unhelpfully
Common misunderstandings
- More stones do not mean more benefit. Two conflicting stones often cancel each other's intent.
- An expensive stone is not automatically the right stone.
- Any practitioner who sells you the stone they prescribe has a conflict of interest.
Alternatives to gemstones
Where a stone is unsuitable or unaffordable, traditional practice offers alternatives: recitation, charity aligned with the planet (daan), fasting on a specific weekday, and behavioural discipline. These are frequently the wiser first step.
Our position
At AkshAstro no gemstones are sold and no remedy is compulsory. If a stone is discussed, you are told which planet it addresses, for how long, and what to expect — and you are free to decline.
